Curators

The national curators of hello stranger: National Exhibition of UK Performance Design 2019-2023 are Kathrine Sandys and Lucy Thornett.

Kathrine and Lucy have been collaborating since 2016, when they were appointed as convenors of the UK Theatre and Performance Research Association (TaPRA) Scenography working group, a post they jointly held until 2019. They curated the talks programme for Staging Places, the UK entry for the Prague Quadrennial of Performance Design and Space for 2019 and subsequent V&A exhibition. They are both longstanding committee members of the Society of British Theatre Designers.

Kathrine is Head of Theatre Practice at the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama. Lucy is a Senior Lecturer in Scenographic Practices at University of the Arts London.

  • Nadia Malik

    Nadia Malik has a twenty-year costume-led design practice during which she has presented work internationally and exhibited in and curated costume events and conferences. She is the Programme Director for the Performance courses at London College of Fashion, UAL. Nadia is the Reviews Editor (exhibitions and events) for the journal Studies in Costume & Performance and, as a PhD candidate, her research focuses on Knowledge Exchange between academia and industry through experimental pedagogical practice in costume.

  • Dana Pinto

    Dana Pinto studied Theatre Design at Wimbledon School of Art and her Masters in Scenography at Birmingham Institute of Art. She has worked as a Designer, a Lecturer in the Arts including Scenic Construction and Scenic Painting and has written qualifications in the Production Arts. Dana is Managing Editor UK with The Scenographer and Founder of the School of Scenography, which inspires and supports those considering studying scenography and those embarking on their entrepreneurial journey.

  • Adrian Rees

    Adrian Rees studied Theatre Design at Wimbledon School of Art. He has designed extensively across The UK in regional repertory theatres, including the Belgrade Theatre in Coventry where he was Head of Design, on large-scale tours, in the West End and abroad, with more than 250 productions to his name. He is a published author of children’s books, from babies to teens and is currently working on his first novel, a mystery/fantasy for young adults.

  • Elizabeth Wright

    Elizabeth Wright is a set and costume designer for theatre with a parallel interest in oral history. She trained at the University of Leeds, Bristol Old Vic Theatre School and has a PhD from Wimbledon College of Art. She began work as a trainee designer at Theatre by the Lake and has designed for theatres across the UK as well as touring productions. She led work to create the British Library’s web resource Voices of British Theatre Design.
